History
Allegany Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse, Inc (ACASA) has been serving Allegany County since 1973, offering a continuum of services for those youth, adults, and families who have been affected by the disease of addiction.
Outpatient Clinical Services
Allegany Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse, Inc. began to provide formalized counseling services in 1975. The need for these services continued to grow over the next few years. Then in the early 1980’s the clinical services for Allegany Council received certification by the State of New York for the provision of counseling services. Over the next 20 years Allegany Council’s clinical services continued to maintain licensure from New York State for both alcohol and drug counseling. In December 2002 New York State combined the two licensees into one and now the clinic currently maintains a chemical dependency licensure. The agency completed the construction of a new Outpatient Clinic building in 2009
Residential Services
In 1986 the Allegany Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse, Inc. established the Trapping Brook Halfway House in Wellsville. This Community Residence had a capacity of 15 beds to provide service for those individuals in recovery. The Residential Program continued to grow and in 1990, Supportive Living facilities were added to the continuum of care for Allegany Council. The Supportive Living program provides a place for individuals that have successfully completed halfway house treatment, to continue their recovery in a safe, sober environment. In 2006 the agency completed the construction of a new Community Residence.
Allegany Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse, Inc. continues to provide both services and currently operates a 17 bed Community Residence along with 6-13 Supportive Living beds in the community.
Prevention Education
Information and prevention was one of the primary reasons for the development of Allegany Council. The Prevention program really began to grow in 1977. At this time the Prevention Education program began to start its outreach into the schools to initiate prevention education programs for school teachers and other school personnel. The Prevention Education program has continued to grow over the years and continues to expand its scope of service. The Prevention Program has grown to the point of providing supplemental curriculum activities in the Allegany County schools, along with outreach and community agencies, for the prevention and intervention of drug and alcohol use and abuse. In 1979 the New York State Division of Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse funded a 3 year research and demonstration grant for Prevention Education and an evaluation of program services. This grant from New York State continued the growth of the Prevention division.
